Bruising after treatment
After any form of injectable treatment some mild bruising should be expected. It can be helpful to use a dark coloured lipstick in order to cover up any mild bruising on your lips after the injections, you should however wait for 24 hours before applying any make up.
When you go to bed that night, sleep with your head slightly raised if possible and avoid any undue pressure on your lips (including kissing) for 24 hours, this will then keep the bruising to a minimum.
A great tip is not to book your injectable treatment the day before you are going to an event, people often ask for their practitioner not a bruise them as they go into an event the next day, unfortunately any injectable treatment does come with a bruising risk. Always have your lip filler treatment approximately one week prior to any important event, this gives time for the bruising and any swelling to subside.
Why do dermal fillers cause swelling?
Dermal Fillers commonly cause swelling. The injection process disturbs the skin and soft tissue, causing minor trauma to the area, and swelling is a natural bodily response whilst the area heals.
What sort of swelling should be expected after a dermal filler procedure?
It’s normal to experience a degree of swelling after any injectable treatment. The amount of swelling varies significantly from patient to patient.
More pronounced swelling is likely to occur with lip fillers. This is due to the delicate nature of the tissue. In most cases, swelling is mild to moderate, but this has significantly reduced with the introduction of more advanced filler products It’s entirely normal for the lips to look very slightly overfilled for the first one to two days after treatment. By the third day, this has usually improved.
How long does swelling usually last?
Swelling subsides, typically, within a few days. It’s most apparent 24 to 72 hours after treatment before starting to subside gradually. Very occasionally, swelling can last from several days to four weeks.

Hyaluronidase is a special enzyme occurring naturally in the human body. When it is injected into the problem area it starts to break down the filler. This treatment works by breaking down the hyaluronic acid in the filler and encouraging the body to reabsorb it. Tissue permeability is increased and the molecular bonds of the hyaluronic acid in the filler are broken down.
At the start of your lip filler dissolving treatment, a patch test is performed about half an hour before your appointment. This involves testing for allergies in the forearm with a small needle. The test will take less than 5 seconds to perform
Starting with a ‘blank canvas’
Dissolving your dermal filler doesn’t mean that you are opting out of the treatment forever. It’s becoming increasingly popular for those who have been receiving lip fillers for years to dissolve their results and start from scratch. This is the aforementioned benefit of lip fillers being buildable because we can dissolve any existing product and start from a blank canvas to gradually shape your treatment area into different results. This is popular for those who have previously enjoyed a more glamorous and fuller pout in their youth, but instead are beginning to prefer a more natural-looking appearance. Our treatment approach can adapt to your preferences, as can the professional products we use, so we can achieve personalised results every time.
